Why Choose June through October?
Timing and location matter most if you bow-hunt. From June to October — the dry winter months — you’ll enjoy ideal conditions.
First, wildlife naturally gathers at scarce water-points, which makes strategic setups far more effective. Also, vegetation thins out, so your visibility improves and you can stalk closer.
Furthermore, daytime temperatures stay comfortable and allow longer field hours. In addition, dark moon phases align with stronger daylight movement and enhance your shot opportunities.
Crafted for Bow Hunters
We built the reserve specifically for bow hunting. We place permanent blinds at high-traffic watering holes so you get your best chance at ethical, close-range shots.
You can choose either blind-based hunts or on-foot stalking. Our professional guides bring deep experience in archery, tracking and precise shot-placement.
Game Species & Hunting Opportunities
Expect an exceptional array of species for bow hunting, including (but not limited to): baboon, common duiker, warthog, impala, nyala, red hartebeest, greater kudu, sable antelope, eland, blue wildebeest, waterbuck and Burchell’s & Hartmann’s zebra.
Bow & Arrow Setup: What to Know
Bow hunting demands precision and careful preparation. Therefore, we recommend the following key guidelines:
For plains game, aim for a minimum draw weight of 50–65 lbs; many archers opt for 60–80 lbs.
For larger or dangerous game (for example, buffalo), you should be comfortable with 75 lbs+ draw weight.
Choose arrows with broadheads — fixed-blade, removable-blade or expandable — that match your target and terrain.
Practice ahead of time. An accurately placed arrow beats one that forces you into tracking.

Bow Hunting FAQ – Safari Bound Southern Africa
What species can be hunted with a bow in South Africa?
Safari Bound Southern Africa offers exceptional bow-hunting opportunities for a wide range of species across diverse habitats. Hunters can pursue plains game such as impala, nyala, kudu, eland, warthog, waterbuck, and zebra, as well as more challenging species like sable, roan, and cape buffalo. Each hunt is conducted ethically and professionally in natural, free-range conditions.
When is the best time for bow hunting?
The prime bow-hunting season in South Africa runs from May to October, during the dry winter months. Vegetation is thinner, visibility is higher, and game naturally concentrates around water sources — creating ideal conditions for close-range encounters. Our expert guides will help you plan your safari for the best possible results based on your target species.
What bow setup is recommended?
For plains game, a compound bow with a minimum draw weight of 50–60 lbs and arrows weighing at least 500 grains is ideal. When pursuing larger or dangerous game such as buffalo, a minimum of 75–80 lbs draw weight and 750 grain arrows is required. We recommend using high-quality fixed-blade or cut-on-contact broadheads — mechanical heads are not permitted.
Is bow hunting safe in South Africa?
Yes. When conducted under professional guidance and with adherence to all safety protocols, bow hunting in South Africa is both safe and ethical. Our experienced PHs (Professional Hunters) ensure that every aspect of your safari — from shot placement to tracking — is managed responsibly. We prioritize safety, respect for the wildlife, and compliance with all local regulations.
What is the typical success rate for bow hunting?
Success rates depend on factors such as species, terrain, weather, and hunter experience. However, with the right preparation and guidance from Safari Bound Southern Africa’s expert team, bow hunters consistently enjoy excellent success rates and unforgettable safari experiences.
