Wingshooting Concessions

Sasolburg Pigeon and Dove Area

Hunting Intensity:
In the broader Free State context, peak pigeon shoots can reach hundreds of shots per hunter per day. Around Sasolburg, volumes may be lower but variety is greater — combining field, bush, and riverine habitats.

Typical Quarry:
Rock pigeons and doves in stubble and sunflower fields; guinea fowl, spurfowl, and Orange River francolin in upland grasslands; and seasonal ducks, Egyptian geese, and spur-winged geese along the Vaal River and wetland edges.

Tweespruit Waterfowl Area

Hunting Intensity:
During peak pigeon periods, hunters may experience hundreds of shots per day — Tweespruit’s fields are well-known for fast-paced, high-volume shooting action.

Typical Quarry:
Rock pigeons and doves, Orange River/Swainson’s francolin, guinea fowl, partridge/quail, and seasonal waterfowl such as ducks, Egyptian geese, and spur-winged geese.

Abrahamshof Mixed Bag Area

Hunting Intensity:
As a game farm rather than a large-scale crop operation, Abrahamshof may offer moderate or specialized hunts compared to high-volume field drives. Hunters seeking maximum action should confirm access to surrounding grain farms.

Typical Quarry:
Rock pigeons and doves feeding over maize and sunflower fields; guinea fowl and Swainson’s francolin in bushveld edges and grassland; and seasonal ducks and geese where wetlands exist nearby.

Settlers Upland Bird Hunting Area

Hunting Intensity:
On good field days, hunters may fire between 250 and 500 shots per day during pigeon/dove hunts — offering energetic, rewarding sport in the heart of Limpopo’s farming country.

Typical Quarry:
Rock pigeons, doves, Swainson’s francolin, spurfowl, guinea fowl, and (in suitable areas) ducks, Egyptian geese, and spur-winged geese.

Big Game Concessions

Vanderkloof Dam — Northern Cape

Vanderkloof Dam (originally P.K. le Roux Dam) sits on the Orange River where the Northern Cape meets the Free State. Built in the 1970s as part of the Orange River Project, the arch dam was completed and commissioned in 1977 and remains one of South Africa’s largest reservoirs and the country’s highest dam wall — today used for irrigation, power generation and recreation.

The Vanderkloof area is primarily known for water-based recreation (boating, fishing) and irrigated agriculture rather than trophy hunting. However, the wider Karoo and Free State upland farms around the dam contain private game and managed hunting farms (plains-game like springbok, blesbok and kudu)

Abrahamshof — Free State

Abrahamshof (often marketed as a hunting/outfitter property in the Theunissen/Free State area) is positioned in the agricultural heartland of the Free State where mixed farming and managed game ranches have become common. The Free State’s rolling grasslands and karroid-transition zones have a long rural history (farms, Anglo-Boer War sites, and mixed livestock and crop agriculture), and many farms now offer outfitting and hunting experiences alongside traditional farming.

Abrahamshof advertises as an “Outfitters Paradise,” focusing on plains-game species typical to the Free State (bok species, warthog, reedbuck, etc.). Hunting operations in this province are normally run by private outfitters on fenced or managed properties, with emphasis on ethically managed trophies, day-roster drives and easy access from major centres.

Tshipise — Limpopo (Tshipise reserve)

Tshipise (from Tshivenda “tshisima tsha u fhisa” — “hot spring”) grew up around a natural mineral hot spring and a resort development from the 1930s. Today Tshipise is best known for its Forever Resort and thermal springs, a caravan and holiday node popular with winter visitors (“the Swaeltjies”) and travellers en route to northern border posts and Limpopo reserves.

The Tshipise region also sits in a broader Limpopo landscape where private reserves and larger hunting concessions operate. Larger nearby reserves (privately managed concessions) maintain populations of many big species and some run controlled big-game hunts — including buffalo, elephant and other large plains species on specific concessions.

Boulders — Greater Kruger (Limpopo)

Boulders Game Ranch & Bush Lodges is a private 1 200-hectare ranch near Mica between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa that borders the Greater Kruger conservation area and the historic Selati Game Reserve. The property is built among granite boulders and offers classic bushveld lodge accommodation and guided activities, taking advantage of the region’s rich biodiversity and proximity to Kruger’s northern landscapes.

Because Boulders borders Greater Kruger and Selati, the area is primarily oriented to photographic safaris, guided game drives and private bush experiences. Where hunting occurs in the broader region it is conducted on privately owned ranches outside national-park boundaries and is regulated: typical species on private concessions include a wide range of plains game and specialised trophy species.

Bird Dog and Bloodspoor Training

Our training programs help bring the dog’s inherent prey drive to top level. We then begin to mould that natural instinct into the desired behaviour of a confident, well mannered dog.
